Youth Poetry Contest 2009

Pima County Public Library and Tucson Youth Week 2009 are hosting a youth poetry contest, February 8-March 21, 2009. Youth poets living within Pima County are invited to write poems on the topic of Celebrating Change! Four winners will be chosen, one from each of the following categories: Kindergarten to grade 2; grades 3 to grade 5; grades 6 to grade 8; and high school. Winners will participate in the Tucson Youth Week Community Recognition Event April 25. Contest submissions must be original poems of up to 30 lines on the topic of Celebrating Change! Poems can be submitted online at or paper copies can be mailed to the library. Paper copies of poems must be typed, single-spaced on white letter-sized paper, accompanied by the poet's name, age, grade, address, phone number, teacher's name and school. Mail paper entries to:

Acting Program (ages 9-13 years)

Free, Mondays, 6-8 p.m. Children have the opportunity to learn the art of acting through role playing, reading from scripts and performing in front a camera. This program is offered at Oury Recreation Center, 600 W. St. Mary's Rd., 791-4788.

In-Betweener's Club (ages 11-14)
This after-school and summer program for ages 11-14, meets Monday-Friday (times vary). Learn to be a valued member of a constructive peer group and enhance positive friendships, overall social skills, self-worth and confidence. Program activities include arts and crafts, cooking, community service projects, outings and special events. Non-refundable registration fee required. Jr. Teen Scene (ages 11-14)

his after-school and summer recreation program for youth ages 11-14 consists of activities geared around special focus themes in the areas of life skills, arts and crafts, dance and music, community service projects, sports, games and career development. Freedom Center 29th Teens (ages 12-17)

Teen Volunteer Program (ages 13-17)
Make a difference; be a teen volunteer. Volunteer opportunities are available for teens ages 13-17 in Parks and Recreation camps, centers, KIDCO and aquatics. Have a fun school year and summer and gain valuable work experience by volunteering. There is a non-refundable registration fee per participant. Oury Teen Club (ages 13-17)
Program for teens, ages 13-17. Wednesday and Friday, 6-8 p.m. Activities include sports, games, art activities and service projects throughout the community. Special events include basketball tournaments and dances at Oury Center, 600 W. St. Mary’s Rd., 791-4788. Non-refundable registration fee required.

Jr. Leadership Volunteer Program (Ages 13-17)
Teens can register for this program during the summer or school year and assist our youth program staff as a Jr. Leader at KIDCO after-school and summer recreation programs. In addition, if skills in lifeguarding are more of an interest, Jr. Lifeguards assist during the summer at our City pools. Teens will gain leadership and work experience skills in addition to building self-esteem and confidence. Fun activities are also planned with this age group in mind. Santa Rosa Teen Tune Up (ages 13-17)
Tune up your body with friends through a variety of strength and conditioning activities that are fresh, funky and fun. For ages 13-17 this program runs August-November, and January-March on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6-8 p.m. Santa Rosa Center, 1080 S. 10th Ave., 791-4589. Free to facility pass holders, or non-refundable registration fee required.

Late Night Hoops Teen Basketball Program (ages 13-19)
Basketball program for teens, ages 13-19, offered Saturdays from October-February at the Randolph, William M. Clements, El Pueblo and Morris K. Udall Centers. Includes evening play from 7-11 p.m. Contact the Sports Office at 791-4870 for information.

Art In Reality Program – A.I.R. (ages 13-21)
Free visual and performing arts program for all youth ages 13-21 living in Pima County. AIR provides fall and spring 10-week programs, ending with the “Keepin' It Real” performance showcase. Through collaborations with the City of Tucson, public, charter, and alternative high schools, AIR meets the following goals and objectives: delinquency prevention, development of healthy bodies and minds, provides school credit and community service opportunities and increases youth employability. Classes vary and range from Poetry to Break Dancing. For more information on classes, locations and times, please call 882-8012.

Regional Center Memberships – Fitness/Wellness Activities
Center Memberships – Recreation, Neighborhood and
Regional Centers offer a wide variety of fitness/wellness opportunities for adults. Facility amenities, which vary from center to center, include weight rooms (for ages 16 and up), racquetball courts, open gymnasium time, billiards, air hockey, foosball, indoor and outdoor walking tracks and locker rooms. Daily fees required. Passes available for 20-visit or quarterly/annual use for individuals and families. Adult Volunteer Program
